On July 16 local time, Genius, an American digital media company known for intepreting and annotating song lyrics, revealed their list of the 25 best songs of 2021 so far.

The list contains songs that were released between December 15, 2020 and June 25, 2021, which were ranked and reviewed by knowledgeable music lovers in Genius. In addition to getting the final 25 songs, a poll was held where contributors discussed revisions and song replacements.

And included in the list is none other than BTS and BLACKPINK’s Rosé!

BTS Butter, One of Genius’ Best Songs of 2021 So Far

BTS’ second English single, “Butter,” took the No. 15 spot on Genius’ Best Songs of 2021 So Far.

According to Genius, “Butter” contains groovy energy and charismatic vocals, and is accompanied by its witty lyrics that are filled with pop references – which is perfect for a general audience of all ages!

“Butter” was released back on May 21 and is the group’s second English-language single following “Dynamite.” The song is a mix of dance-pop, disco-pop, elements of pop-rap, and EDM, and was written by BTS’ RM, Jenna Andrews, Stephen Kirk, Ron Perry, Alex Bilowitz, Robert Grimaldi, and Sebastian Garcia. “Butter” was also produced by Ron Perry, Stephen Kirk, and Robert Grimaldi.

According to the BTS members, they didn’t plan on releasing another single. However, as the pandemic is prolonged, they decided they needed a summer song.

Lyrically, the song doesn’t contain a heavy message as it is meant to be a song that is easy to listen to, and compared to “Dynamite,” “Butter” focuses more on showing each members’ charm and their “smooth like butter” charisma.

Upon the song’s release, “Butter” became a huge hit, topping multiple charts in Billboard, Gaon, Oricon, and more. Most notably one of their biggest achievements, “Butter” topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks, a first for any Asian act.

BLACKPINK Rosé On The Ground Makes it toGenius’ Best Songs of 2021 So Far

Ranking No. 8 is BLACKPINK Rosé debut song “On The Ground.”

According to Genius, “On The Ground” is an impactful pop gem thanks to the song’s use of the guitar, which amplifies the chorus’ bass-heavy EDM drop.

“On The Ground” was released earlier this year on March 12 as Rosé’s solo debut song, and as the lead single of her album “R.” The song is a mix of synth-pop elements, electropop, pop, pop rock, and an EDM-inspired beat that is accompanied by a simple guitar.

It was written by Rosé, alongside Jorgen Odegard, Amy Allen, Jon Bellion, Raúl Cubina, and YG Entertainment’s in-house producer, Teddy Park. “On The Ground” was also produced by Teddy Park, Jorgen Odegard, Jon Bellion, 24, and Ojivolta.

Lyrically, “On The Ground” is about Rosé and her rise to fame, such as from playing the piano and singing during her childhood, to moving to South Korea to join one of the biggest K-Pop acts.

According to Rosé, the meaning behind the song is to convey the message that “everything we need is already within us.”

The release of “On The Ground” became a success and broke multiple records. It became the most viewed music video on Youtube by a K-Pop soloist in 24 hours, as well as Rosé becoming the first K-Pop soloist to top Billboard’s Global 200.

In addition, “On The Ground” was also included in Billboard’s 50 Best Songs of 2021 So Far.

With these two songs’ achievements and impact, it’s no wonder they are one of the best songs in 2021!
